Looking for an exercise program that isn't high impact, yet will yield the best results and multiple benefits? Using a stationary exercise bike is one of the most ideal low impact aerobic exercises known to man. It helps burn fat and build muscle, without aggravating your limbs, spine, lower back and other body parts. Stationary bikes are also very convenient, as you can exercise whether it's night or day, sunny or rainy. And if you get bored, you can actually be able to watch TV while still getting an adequate work out on your stationary bike.

Bicycle riding is great for muscular flexibility and development, keeping your muscles not only toned but in perfect condition for all kinds of physical activity. It is also a great form of cardiovascular exercise, as it keeps the heart constantly pumping oxygen and other nutrients through your system. Aerobic exercise is also what burns calories and fat, as well as what produces natural endorphins, which acts as a pain reliever and anti-depressant.

Riding your stationary bike therefore helps you burn calories and lose weight, while keeping your muscles toned and flexible, promoting good circulation and is a natural pain reliever. Of course, aerobic exercise can be produced through other workout schemes, but stationary biking offers the least stress and the most pain-relieving benefits among the different possibilities.

There are two kinds of stationary bikes: Upright Exercise Bikes, which most resemble real bicycles, and Recumbent Exercise Bikes, which are designed for further comfort. Recumbent bikes have saddle seats with a back support, built especially for those with lumbar problems and lower back pain. Additionally, the movements deployed when pedaling a bicycle tones specific leg and thigh muscles that will help strengthen the back, not only helping to heal your back pain, but priming you to be strong enough to keep it from returning.

Although recumbent bikes are more ergonomically correct than the original upright model, other stationary bikers prefer the upright as it gives the feeling of being on an actual bicycle. You can keep lower back pain at bay by leaning forward towards your handlebars and keeping your spine aligned as you pedal away.

So why not just take your sturdy bike out for a spin every now and then? You could do this as part of your exercise routine, but imagine the many possible rainy days you could use as an excuse for you not to exercise. Stationary bikes are guaranteed to keep you regular at your fitness program. Also, riding your bike on rough surfaces will make your low impact exercise a stressfully bumpy, high impact ride instead.

Also, consider the security of your neighborhood. There will be locations you can go, but how far are you willing to bike away from your home? Or perhaps doing laps around the park can get very old, very fast. Biking on your stationary upright or recumbent in the safety of your own home is always the more practical choice.

Aside from all the benefits that have already been listed, using a stationary bike is bound to be the most enjoyable means of exercise that you can encounter. Whether you like to bike while watching the morning news or you get that thrill of being twelve again and speeding fast through your neighbors' backyards, you'll be surprised at how long you'll be riding your stationary exercise bike. Double the benefits with half the effort, that's why stationary exercise bikes are the best.
